This interesting Swedish sailor's work-knife or svensk sjömanskniv, was manufactured by the Eskilstuna cutler Gustaf Johan Berg (company was in existence ca.1863-1891). Knife is 20.5 cm long, with a 9.5 cm blade, maker-marked on the ricasso and the brass scabbard, which is also stamped with a model No.7. Knife has a very-nicely carved ebony handle; the high relief scrimshaw depicts budding flowers and tobacco leaves in vignettes, on both sides. Point is blunted, and the blade has a nice uniform patina.
This is the second example of this type of knife I have had over the years, and is of a significantly higher artistic quality.
