Description
This eagle pommel American officer's sword is modeled after the British King's Army flank officer's saber of the 1803 Pattern. Massive hilt retains much of the original fire gilding, with a beautiful knuckle bow composed of a strand of grenades intertwined with two serpentine fuse cords. The quality and detail of the hilt casting is excellent. Grip has a chip near the pommel. The bottom of the grip's backpiece is pushed into the ferrule, a result of crudely-attempted hilt tightening. Blade is 30"/79 cm long, and carries vestiges of military and floral trophies, as well as the Federal Shield. There is a slight bend of the back of the blade at the recess. There is some staining, but no pitting or corrosion on the blade. Scabbard chape is long gone. In my opinion the scabbard is not original to the sword, as it's mounts are plain and not gilt, and don't match the hilt's detail, but it fits the blade well.
American slotted hilts of this style are seldom seen. An excellent War of 1812 sword!
