This seldom seen variant of the Philadelphia cutler Frederick Widmann Type II/III eagle pommel sword dates ca.1830. The sword features all the attributes of the early Widmann swords, now justly desirable by collectors - the characteristic oversized eagle head pommel with the laurel wreath clutched in its beak, the knuckle bow in the shape of a classical column, cockleshell quillon, scabbard engraved with two Federal Eagles, scabbard mounts and the grip ferrule decorated with grapevines, all are typical of the earlier Widmann swords. The thin layer of original silver-plating has worn thin, exposing the dark brass underneath. Blade is 30" long, with vestiges of original bluing, and all of the gilt decorations intact.
