Description
An estate-fresh find from the Upstate New York, this officer's hanger dates to the American Revolutionary War. Iron hilt has acquired a beautiful chocolate patina; horn grip has small chips. Blade is 68 cm-long, in Montmorency style, with a 22 cm-long false edge. This is a battle weapon, which still retains its sharp edge. Saber is housed in a crude wooden scabbard, painted black, with one make-shift carry-ring remaining. Scabbard has a chip of wood missing at the tip. Presence of the artisan-made scabbard, fabricated to fit this weapon specifically, points toward use by the provincial officer. Possibly a captured British weapon, this short saber was then carried by a Continental officer in the Revolutionary War.
