AMERICAN INFANTRY GENERAL'S EAGLE POMMEL SWORD CA.1830

This deluxe sword features a hand-chased silver-plated hilt, with a downturned shell guard decorated with a victorious Roman centurion surrounded by military trophies, fasces, axes, and standards. Two lions are peering inward from atop each side of the guard. The quillon terminal is a dolphin's head. Much of the silver plating is gone, with vestiges remaining in recesses. The victory theme of the guard decoration is suggestive of a person with power and responsibility. The style is typically French, deriving from the French general officers swords from the late Napoleonic and Restoration periods. The shape of the eagle pommel is consistent with the Widman vernacular. Blade is 32" long, blued and gilded ovr etched military and floral motifs. Obverse recess is maker-marked with initials SH.
