Description
This American Revolutionary War period French Model 1767 grenadier hanger measures 29" overall, with a robust 23" blade inscribed on the back M=ture R=le D'alsace. Knuckle bow is marked with the inspector's poincon 'crowned R'. Blade retains almost all of its factory polish, the sword has a nice, solid feel. What distinguishes this early example from the later ones, is the casting technique. Earlier hilt, like this one, were cast in two pieces, later examples were of single piece construction.
Short swords of this type were carried by the French Grenadiers De Marine as well as the Continental infantry troops during the American Revolutionary War. This sword was purchased a dealer in Milford, Connecticut some years back, and according to him, was acquired from a local estate.
