This sword was indeed beautiful, when it arrived in the New York harbor on a ship from England, ca.1810. English-made, retailed by the New York cutlers Christopher & John David Wolfe, it bears a 32" blade with a very long false edge, a scarcely-seen shape, seldom-encountered on the British cavalry officers 1796 blades of the Waterloo vintage, and almost never on American blades. Despite obvious losses, the blade retains many of its etched decorations, which are quite wonderful. The sword suffered from the improper storage over the years, in an obvious way. I cleaned off the cobwebs and oiled the blade and the scabbard. This old veteran, bruised and neglected, is fresh from a New England attic.
