Cutlasses of this type were used by the Dutch East Indies colonial troops and marines in the jungle of Sumatra and Borneo from the 1860s to the late 1870s, when they were replaced by the klewang.
This rare version of the Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger Kapmes M.1862 is mounted with a massive 54 cm. long single edged blade that has acquired a nice uniform dark patina. The blade is different from the shorter trooper's version, which leads me to believe that it was an officer's or nco's personal weapon, with a blade that was made in the East Indies. It is longer than the trooper's version, with a hatchet-point, and a narrow fuller at the top. The grip is of tropical hardwood, wound with brass wire. The hilt is almost identical to the soldier's version, with the added incised decorations of the brass furniture. Scabbard leather is decorated with pressed cross-crossed lines.
