US CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE CAVALRY M1840 SABER OF J.F.MOFFATT

This M1840 saber bears a K&C-marked blade of standard dimensions, 35" long. Blade has several small nicks on the edge, dark patina, the point has a light wave to it.
Hilt is stamped -

The construction of the hilt, the look of the brass, along with the shape of the grip, and the grip covering [oil cloth(?), now well-worn] , suggest Southern manufacture and mounting. The washer between the blade tang and the hilt is unusually thick.
Scabbard is punch-engraved

Scabbard has patinated nicely and evenly. There is no play, the sword is tight.
According to the Civil War Soldier and Sailor System, a private by that name served with the 22nd (Bateau's) Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry, I Company. 22nd Tennessee Cavalry was usually called 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, or the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Battalion.
