Description

This 1884 Springfield is serial-numbered 339253, which indicates an early production. Serial numbers for the 1884 rifles and carbines range from 300,000 to 500,000, roughly.

The breech is marked US MODEL 1873, which according to Lederman's Guide indicates that this was one of the earliest Model 1884 rifles assembled in Springfield, and the existing 1873-marked breeches were used, until the supply was exhausted.

Metal retains much of the original bluing and is intermixed with pleasing plum patina. There are patches of superficial rust on some parts of metal. Bore is mirror-bright, with spots of shallow corrosion. Lock functions well, as does the trapdoor. The Buffington sight leaf was period-removed, and the sight plate filed down and adjusted to serve as the rear sighting notch. All the proof-marks are clear and legible.
The wood of the stock shows light bruising, but has no cracks or repairs, just some service dings, especially on the left side of the butt. Cartouches in the wood are visible, but faint.
Overall, an excellent Indian Wars 1884 Springfield.
