Description
This wonderful inter-bellum period Ames-made militia staff officer's Mameluke-hilted sword dates ca.1855. Maker's mark is inscribed on the reverse side of the blade, under a langet - AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MA in two lines.
The blade is decorated with damascus-like  panels, patriotic and floral decorations. The quality of the blade decoration is quite outstanding, once again proving that Ames could stand up to the best that Solingen and London had to offer at that time.

Mameluke hilt is in fine condition, both mother of pearl grips have chips off one corner each; grip wire is long gone. I would strongly recommend not to tighten the pommel for the risk of damaging the delicate grip scales.
Original scabbard is decorated in acanthus leaves, is in fine state, missing one of the rings.
